War-date Union civilian’s Autograph Letter Signed by Mary H. Dow, 4pp. octavo, Hudson, January 3, 1863, with cover, it reads in part: “...I take a ride every week to Nashua [New Hampshire] we are making army draweres and have to carry them over every week. I have two boarders that work on them...I hope you do not feel the hard times as I do but I will not complain so long as I can get enough to eat and drink which I have done so far and guess I shall for the present hard times we have and hard times we shall have so long as we have a Republican president. I do sincerely hope he will not be run in another term January...What does your Mother say about slavery. I would like to ask her if she thinks it is any worse than buying our white folks for substitutes and selling them to go into the army is it not into bondage for sure, as they desert they are hunted if they are caught they are shot. Did you ever know of the slaves being used worse than that and I am sure as for being fed they are treated in that respect better than a great many of our poor soldiers who have to march miles on hard bread and sugar...” Fine condition.
