Field printed General Orders No. 54, 2p. octavo, Head Quarters 16th Army Corps, Memphis, Tennessee, May 16, 1863, and reads in part: “...At a Military Commission which convened at Bolivar, Tenn., on the 17th day of November 1862, pursuant to Special Orders No. 19...and of which Colonel ADOLPH ENGLEMAN of the 42d Regiment Illinois Infantry Volunteers is President, were arraigned and tried: 1st JOHN W. ATKINSON, citizen of Hardiman county, State of Tenn. Charge 1st - Treason against the Government of the United States...Charge 2d - Violation of the Laws of War...Charge 3d - Robbing and plundering the property of loyal citizens...Charge 4th - Threatening to kill or hang Union men...Charge 5th - Giving aid to the enemy...And the Commission does therefore sentence him, the said John W. Atkinson, that he be confined in some place to be designated by the General commanding, for and during the continuance of this rebellion...The prisoner will be forwarded to the custody of Provost Marshal of the District of Memphis, by whom he will be transported to the Military Prison at Alton, Illinois, there to be held in confinement...” VG.
