War-date Union Autograph Letter Signed, 4p. octavo, Newbern, North Carolina, August 21, 1863, and reads in part: “...Arrived at Washington, I found Lieut S. at the depot...We took the horse cars to 6th St. Wharf & a more dusty fellow you never saw...After supper I went up to see W[ashington]. by gaslight. It was a dirty city I found it....visited the Capitol & other public buildings of W. the Capitol you don’t see at a glance. That painting ‘Westward the Course of Empire takes its way’ was as John says the most splendid thing I ever saw....The places of interest were the stations of the famous Senators & Representatives of both the past & present. In the mind eye one can seem to see Webster, Clay, Davis, Douglas, Sumner & the galaxy of Senators both loyal & traitors stand as once they used to in past days. May we soon again see the United States united & the halls filled with loyal spirits...In a few days I expect to hear of J. with a bonafide commission & popular both with officers & men...I visited the Fort Monroe. It is a splendid Ft. on the inside you would scarcity think it a fort for the houser & trees entirely conceal the ramparts. The ordinary garrison is 3000 men. The officers mostly have their wives with them & the interior seems rather like a country village than a fort. It is a very likely place & vessels are constantly coming & going. The ‘Lincoln Gun’ of huge size is mounted on the beach & prepared to do fearful execution if called upon...” More. VG.
