War-date diary ID’d on blank fly leaf in ink “William A. Leonard, Gt. Barrington Mass. Co. F 16th Mass. Vols. Deep Bottom, James River Aug 17th/64” and covers from mid August 1864 through the end of April 1865, with good content pertaining to the war and his job as an ambulance driver, it reads in part: “...City Point Hospital broke up. Marched from the Point till about half past three, towards the right of the line...[8/18]Carried a sick man to the hospital. Heavy musketry on the right. Night our division crossing the river. Took the sick & wounded & crossed the river, marching all night...[8/19] Parked in the woods before Petersburg. Stretcher bearer gone to the front...[8/26]Hard fighting on the left yesterday. Rebs charged two times. Only two Divis. of our Corps engaged they broke our line the last charge. Our reinforcements not in time. Our train went out there & took a lot of wounded to City Point...[9/13]Carried a wounded man in today. Pickets firing all the while. [9/14] Relieved. Carried a man to City Point to be embalmed tonight...[10/17] Went to City Point to get my ambulance repaired...[10/19]Brought a dead man up to the artillery brigade from the side of the Point, was killed by the negroes in a row...[10/27]Met the enemy drove them out of some rifle pits. Division engaged today hard fighting. Ambulances under fire, most surrounded in an open field, only one ambulance hit. Stopped on the field after the train had gone to gather the wounded together. Driving all night, reached the hospital inside our lines about noon. Carted wounded to the cars till night and then went back to our old camp in front of Petersburg...[11/8]Flag of Truce in, 17 Reb dead carried to their lines by our stretcher bearers, were killed in the charge...[2/5/65] Moved this morning to the left near Hatchers Run. Drove in their pickets. Rebs charged our Brigade three times & were repulsed everytime. 8th New Jersey lost heavy. Taking wounded to the hospital tonight...[3/1] Sent to E & HT Anthony & Co. for photograph album...[3/25]Fighting today all along the line. Our Divis. engaged a good many wounded. 120 NY lost a good many. Carting wounded...[3/26] Took two wounded men to hospital & two dead bodies...[3/27] Taking to Hosp. Sheridan here with his cavalry...[3/30] Saw about a hundred & fifty prisoners over at the Station. The 5th Corps engaged today...[3/31] My division engaged today went to the front after wounded. Fighting all along the line...[4/2] The 8th New Jersey charged the Rebel picket line, carting wounded. The 6th Corps broke their lines near Petersburg & were coming down on their flank. They had to leave their works. Our Corps in the rear of Petersburg...[4/6] Marching all day passed through Ottaway Court House. Heavy cannonading at the front...[4/7] Sheridan & our troops captured Ewell’s Corps a large wagon train...[4/9]Gen. Lee has surrendered to Gen. Grant firing salutes, cheering, bands playing everyone rejoicing...[4/16] Rumored the President is shot...It is confirmed about the President being shot, was shot by a man by the name of Booth...” More.
