A great war-date Union book, black glazed wraps with gold lettering entitled: "INCIDENTS IN DIXIE Being TEN MONTHS' EXPERIENCE of a UNION SOLDIER in the MILITARY PRISONS of RICHMOND, N. ORLEANS AND SALSBURY. Published for the Benefit of Maryland State Fair for the Christian and Sanitary Commissions." Measuring 3 1/2" x 6", 89pp., printed by James Young, Baltimore, 1864. The story covers the entire capture and imprisonment of anonymous Union soldier captured during the Union army's retreat from the bloody battlefield of First Bull Run. A small sample of his story begins, in part: "We were on a full retreat toward Washington, my regiment covering the rear. At every step some poor unfortunate gave out…at Centreville many more gave out, myself among the number. Weak and dispirited, I was asked to take shelter under the roof of a kind old doctor…up hill and down I went, in vain trying to get away from such devastation…at the cross roads that lead to Vienna, I was upon the point of firing my musket…when an officer riding up advised me not to do so…he thought I knew him to be a Southerner. But I was too sick to know anything…I reached Fairfax…I was awakened by some one kicking me…at the same time a gruff voice demanded my arms…". Much more interesting content and note listed in Broadfoot. Front cover is detached with slight wear, else VG.
