A pair of letters, one written the wife and the second to the mother of Union soldier Cyrus Stockwell who enlisted 9/2/1862 into 77th IL Infantry, was wounded at Sabrine Crossroads and died of wounds in New Orleans May 13, 1864. The first, N.O., May 11, 1864, 3pp., octavo and reads in part, “I have for some weeks visited your husband who is in the St. Louis Hospital in this city, and feel it is my duty to state to you that he is in a very critical condition - and his physicians consider his recovery impossible. ... I have just returned from your husband’s bedside. He is much lower than yesterday ... Your husband died at five this morning. ... May God give you strength to bear this truly great affliction ...” ...plus; Brattleboro VT, July 1, 1864, 5pp., written by “Francis C. Williams” enlisted as a Chaplin on 12/20/1861, and was Mustered Out on 6/22/1864, VG. In part, “I write to say that your dear son retained his senses fully till within a few minutes before his death, when he quietly fell asleep. ... He suffered a good deal before he came to New Orleans, ... he was so happy not to be a prisoner in their cruel hands..”. Very good condition.
