A good group of three war-date Union letters and cash receipt written by Pvt. William R. Burroughs, 1864, reading, in part: "…[Sandusky City, Oh., Feb. 17, 64]…my Regt is over on Johnson's Island but it has been so bad weather and so much loose ice in the bay that we could not get over. We have been boarding to a hotel…I hear that none but Rebel officers are confined on the Island. A squad of them were sent to Gen. Butler a short time ago…by reports they are a set of troublesome fellows…I found the Allegheny folks well…somebody tied a bar of railroad iron across the track near Greenville. The train was thrown off the track and finally brought up in a big woodpile. Luckily no one was hurt though we were all pretty badly scared…[Sandusky, Mar. 22]…you have heard of the new loan of 2000,000 to be made shortly called the 10-40 loan…I can raise a hundred dollars more to invest…the bay has been frozen over…teams can cross from the city…[Brandy Station, Va., April 17]…we will probably be paid before long…I shall send you…$100 which you can keep and invest for me…". The receipt accounts for cash given to a certain A. Kinney and includes Kinney's payment of three hundred dollars for Burroughs mortgage. Minor tape repair effects one, else VG.
