War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Hamilton Alricks, 1st Pennsylvania Militia, 4pp. octavo, Memphis, April 1, 1864, with good content pertaining to the negroes and a young spy being captured, it reads in part: "...Rock Smith has returned from his trip home and looks much better. He says Harrisburg has changed very much...Great numbers of strangers are in the city and as many soldiers as ever....this day (April Fools day)...I see the little niggers in the streets tying strings on persons coat tails. I suppose you girls have a gay time to day in practicing the art of deception....I have been thinking of taking advantage of an opportunity that is offered me to accompany Genl Pope's expedition to Idaho where the gold is said to be plenty. A Captain Parmer is going out with the Commissary train and young man who is going along asked if I would go if he gave me a good situation....A little boy who roamed with me for a while and went to Meridan with Genl Sherman as a spy has been captured by the Rebels and will probably be hung. He is only about fourteen years old. But very sharp. He went into Vicksburg and out of it before it was taken for Genl. Sherman...." Fine.
