War-date Union officer’s Autograph Letter Signed by Lt. Alexander McLain, 3rd New York Light Artillery, 1pp. octavo, Camp in front of Petersburg, August 31, 1864, addressed to the sister of J.P. Hamilton, 7th Tennessee Vols, and reads in part: “..I take great pleasure in forwarding this letter [not present] that I received from your brother’s hand yesterday on the picket line. I write this note in order to afford you an opportunity of answering his letter by addressing it to me. I will have it sent across the lines providing it contains nothing contraband. My address is 1st Lieut. A.S. McLain 3rd N.Y. Indpt. Battery Artillery Brigade 6th Army Corps Army of Potomac...if it arrives while I am on this line I will have no difficulty in sending it to him...” Fine condition.
