War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Joseph Baxter, 182nd New York Vols, Corcoran’s Legion, 3pp. octavo, City Point, Virginia, July 16, 1864, and reads in part: “...If they don’t surrender Petersburg in 24 hours they will shell the city. The other day they sent a shell through the town clock...The rebels are raising old Harry with us with our gunboats in sight. We drive the rebels back every time they make a charge. I have good times here...we think we will have Petersburg before long. I hear that Colonel Murphy is coming back to take command of the Brigade. There was not a general or a colonel took command of our brigade but what got killed or wounded, but I hope he will not. We got the town railroad in our hand. We cut off all communication so they will starve or either surrender. They are fighting three days on Malvern Hill and see them across the river. Captain Kelly is wounded...” Very good condition.
