War-date Union Autograph Letter Signed “W.W. Morton” U.S. Sanitary Commission agent, providing text of a letter by Francis Richard, Major Commanding 188th Pennsylvania, 1-1/4p. octavo, U.S. Sanitary Commission lettersheet, October 14, 1864, and reads “We have information from Washington to the effect that Hiram R. Shinkle, Captain E. 188 P.V. ‘was wounded May 16, 1864 at Drury’s Bluff, was left on the field and captured by the Rebels. A man of ours, also wounded and captured says he saw his body on the amputation table in Richmond, amputation was performed and he died while it was being done.’ This is all we know of him and I believe we are justified now in believing him dead...” VG.
