War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by James B. Thornton Baker, Quartermaster Sergeant, 10th New Hampshire Volunteers, 2pp. quarto, Yorktown, Virginia, April 27, 1864, and reads in part: “...I am working for a commission in the New Hamp Cavalry and drop this to you to secure your aid if possible in my behalf. Wm. G. Gannon has a testimonial from officers here; will you see him and add your aid to what he may wish to do...my object is to get out of the 10th if possible. It makes little difference hat i go into once free from the powers that rule the ‘bloody 10th.’ ...I will tell you my reason for not desiring to stay longer than possible in the 10th but it would not be perhaps good policy to put them upon paper...We have had a stationary camp for about 8 months, but the duty has been very hard most of that time as we were in the extreme front, and had several miles of picketing to do, besides a good share of digging...” About very good condition.
