HAYNIE, Isham Nicholas (1824-1868) Civil War Union Brigadier General. Deeply devoted to Union, in the days leading up to the Civil War's outbreak, he was the organizer of the 48th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Commissioned Colonel in command of the 48th Illinois, he led his troops in engagements in the Tennessee Campaigns of 1862 and was severely wounded at the Battle of Shiloh. Promoted Brigadier General in November 1862, he was placed in command of the 3rd Division, XVII Corps in the Vicksburg Campaign and was again severely wounded. Due to his injury, he was relieved of duty on March 6, 1863. In his post war career, he was a lawyer, Judge adjutant General of Illinois and was part of the delegation appointed to accompany the body of President Abraham Lincoln back to Illinois, after his death. Civil War general's Letter Signed "I.N. Haynie" 1pp. quarto, on General Head Quarters State of Illinois Adjutant General's Office lettersheet, Springfield, Illinois, July 20, 1865, addressed to Brevet Colonel J.C. Smith, 96th Regt. Ills. vols, and reads "Your letter of the 17th inst. informing me that you had forwarded the colors of your Regiment to this office is received. In reply I have the honor to inform you that the colors came to hand yesterday and that I have placed the same in the archives of this state, and I enclose herein a receipt for the same dated May 13, 1865..." Fine condition.
