An interesting two piece war-date letter group that deals with threats made against Baltimore merchant Jacob J. Bankard by the Union soldiers housed at Patterson Park Hospital. As one of Baltimore's major meat supplier's to the US Army, he became very wealthy as a result of the Government contracts. First, is a Autograph Letter Signed, "By the Soldiers of Patterson Park", written to Mr. Bankard, 1p., April 4, 1865, Baltimore, MD, VG. In part: "…it is requested by the Soldiers of Patterson Park that you this day display the national flag from your dwelling, the dimensions of which must be ten feet at least...if not you may expect a visit from the inmates of this hospital…". The second is a 1p. Union officer's letter written by Asst. Adjutant General "Wm. H. Wiegel" as Major and Acting Provost Marshall, Baltimore, April 4, 1865, VG. In small part: "I have the honor to call to your attention the enclosed letter from one of the inmates of your hospital, threatening violence to J.J. Bankard, a truly Loyal man....". Both VG
