War-date Autograph Letter Signed, "John A. Mitchell" , 18th Iowa Infantry, 3p. quarto, January 27, 1865, Fort Smith, Arkansas, and reads in part: "…four boats came up here last Sunday with 500 tons of provisions for us…as they went back the Rebels ran afoul of them and captured the Chipaway and burnt her up…they took all the niggers off with them and paroled the whites and disabled Hines but she landed on a sand bar where they could not get to her and the other two returned back to Van Buren without much damage one had a canon ball to go threw the pilot house it is supposed that there were about thirty or forty women and children got drowned by jumping over board. They and about 4 regiments left here now the 18th Iowa the 12 Kansas the 13th Kansas and the First Arkansas in all about 2000 men there aint no colored troops at this place at all that is what does me good to get separated from the Negroes. The report is here that old Pap Price being dead…" VG.
