A great pair of war-date Union officer's letters, totaling seven pages, written by Capt. Ephraim P. Averill, 12th Mass. Vols., Carver Hospital, Washington, April 28, 1865, in part: "…scarcely had the smoke cleared away from the ruins of Fort Sumter when I joined the army. In…July I left my home…to battle for the rights of my country…our quiet was…disturbed at the battle of Cedar Mountain in which I received a shot in my clothing. At Bull Run I was severely wounded and carried from the field in a terrible condition very weak from the great loss of blood…others fell very fast being exposed to a withering fire from the enemy…fire was brought to bear on me but I survived the terrible shock receiving…two wounds which have disabled me to a certain extent…". Also included is Averill's April 14th in which he waxes poetic over the losses and suffering of comrades during the Civil War. Both are accompanied by their original stamped transmittal covers.
