PATTERSON, Robert (1796-1881) was a United States major general during the Mexican-American War and at the beginning of the American Civil War. His inability to contain a small Confederate army within the Shenandoah Valley was a proximate cause for the Union Army's defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run, bringing his Civil War career to a premature conclusion. Autograph Letter Signed “R. Patterson” 1pp. octavo, February 18, 1881, addressed to Col. Nicholson, in about very good condition.
