LOGAN, John Alexander (1826-1886) was an American soldier and political leader. He served in the Mexican-American War and was a General in the Union Army in the American Civil War. He served the state of Illinois as a State Senator, Congressman and Senator and was an unsuccessful candidate for Vice President of the United States with James G. Blaine in the election of 1884. He is regarded as the founder of Memorial Day. Autograph Letter Signed, “John A. Logan” 1pp. quarto, on U.S. Senate lettersheet, February 24, 1884, with original transmittal cover addressed to L. Calhoun in Kerens, Texas, and reads “Please accept my thanks for the interest you have taken in my welfare. Of course I know that as a rule matters in the South are managed in a very different way than in the North they are accostomed to having them; but I trust that the people will take hold and for once speak for themselves...” Fine condition.
