DAHLGREN, John Adolphus Bernard (1809-1870) was a United States Navy leader. He headed the Union Navy's ordnance department during the American Civil War and designed several different kinds of guns and cannons that were considered part of the reason the Union won the war. For these achievements, Dahlgren became known as the "Father of American Naval Ordnance." He reached the rank of rear admiral. Twice Signed CDV, first on the front, “Jno. A. Dahlgren, R(ear) Admiral Comm(anding) S(outh) At(lantic) Squadron.” Then on the reverse, “J. Dahlgren, R. Admiral Com. S. At. Sqdn, Charleston, April 6, 1865.” VG. Dahlgren’s Squadron was present a week later, April 14, 1865, for the raising of the flag over Fort Sumter.
