Quite rare 5" X 8" photograph, William Baulch, Fortress Monroe, Virginia back imprint. Image is of the "Casement Where Jeff Davis was confined and ironed Fort Monroe, Va." On the verso. Davis was caught and arrested on May 10th, 1865, and on May 19, 1865, Davis was imprisoned in a casemate at Fortress Monroe, on the coast of Virginia. He was placed in irons for three days. Davis spent the next few years in prison, being released in early 1869. This rare image is where Davis was held. A scarce photograph, especially in this large format.
