A Father's Prayer, original signed painting, by noted Civil War artist David Wright. This original painting is accomplished with acrylic on masonite, 30" x 22," framed, signed in the lower right and later released in a limited edition which has been sold out. The winter of 1863-'64 was bitterly cold and the Army of Northern Virginia was poorly clad and poorly fed. Lee cared for his men as a father would his sons, returning gifts sent him from friends and family, seeking instead food and aid for his devoted army. "The soldiers are much in need," he wrote his wife Mary. The night after Christmas, the general received word of the death of his daughter-in-law, Charlotte. "I grieve for our lost darling," he said in a letter to Mary, "as a father can only grieve for a daughter." He knew that grief well, a year before he felt it when death claimed daughter Annie. But Lee's faith sustained him. He took comfort in knowing they would "at last unite in that haven of rest, where trouble & sorrow never enters, to join in the everlasting chorus of praise & glory to our Lord & Savior!" As a son of God, in the hour of trial Lee sought strength and guidance from his heavenly Father. David Wright was born Rosine, Kentucky in 1942 and raised in Tennessee, David Wright has always had a close association with the two major subjects of his work: the country landscape and American history. Professionally trained as an artist with study in Europe, Wright entered the competitive field of commercial art as an illustrator and designer in 1962. His career was interrupted in 1964 by two years of service in the U.S. Army. In 1973 he joined a newly-formed company to market his prints.
