Autograph Letter Signed by Charles H. Hall, 2pp. quarto, Cadiz, May 15, 1812, with integral leaf addressed to Henry Ward, Wall Street, New York, by “Captn. Buckley with $2,500” it reads in part: “...Enclosed you have Invoice & Bill Lading of Two thousand five hundred dollars, specie, shipped pr. the Asia, Capt. Buckley bound for New York, which you will please to received and place to my credit....as respects business I have nothing to fear, but every thing to hope as we have had already the consignment of eight ships and should war not take place there is a certainty of obtaining as much business as might be desired. There is but one obstacle in the way and that you suggested at my departure, as I find that pomposity we spoke of a most insurmountable evil, and how to obviate it, I am at a loss to determine the American captains & super cargoes are plain men and they uniformly dislike every thing like style, loft expressions disgust them, and would I not become able to hit upon some other plan, than the one first proposed I am much inclined to think, the House at Gibraltar, will do nothing...I think the embargo will be a temporary measure, for which reason I do not despond...” Very good condition.
