EARLY, Peter (1773-1817) was an American lawyer, jurist, and politician. After his congressional service, Early was elected by the Georgia General Assembly as judge of the Superior Court of the Ocmulgee Circuit and presided over that court from 1807 until 1813. The respect and popularity he gained from his service on that bench propelled him to a successful campaign to be elected the 28th Governor of Georgia in 1813. He served one term which lasted through 1815 during which Early was instrumental in committing money on several occasions from the state treasury to help raise and supply additional troops from Georgia to the American military forces during the later half of the War of 1812. War-date Autograph Letter Signed “Peter Early” 3pp. quarto, Executive Department, Georgia, Milledgeville, May 19, 1814, addressed to Brigadier General John Floyd in Camden County, and reads in part: “...The measure you have taken of ordering into the field one hundred and twenty militia from the third regiment was a highly proper exercise of discretion and receives my full approbation. It will be prudent that in every case where our militia are ordered out on an emergency arrangements should be made, if practiciable with the officer commanding the troops of the United States on that station for having the supplied by the United States contractor. As it is probable that the officer so commanding may refuse to direct the necessary supplies to be furnished without instructions from General Pinckney I shall, to obviate difficulty, write by this mail to the General, and request that instructions to that effect be given. General Orders were issued yesterday to have the first class of the militia in Byrne’s Walker’s, Brown’s, Scott’s, Lee’s & Blackshear’s Brigades placed in a state of readiness to march at a moment’s warning. I shall, in my letter to General Pinckney, tender him the whole or any part of this force. If he will accept them much difficulty and burthen to the State will thereby be avoided. If otherwise, we must act for ourselves as circumstances shall require. You will be so good as to communicate to me early information of every material movement on the part of the enemy...” Very good condition.
