West Point Diploma for John S. Stoddard of the State of New York, July 4, 1830, with appointment in the United States Army, an appointment he declined to join the Navy. partly printed, 11” x 17,” some discoloration at bottom, light ink. The document is signed by “S(ylvanus) Thayer” as Superintendent (considered the "Father of West Point" because of his development of the school of engineering), E A. Hitchcock, future Federal Civil Major General, D(avid) B. Douglass, War of 1812 Officer, Thomas Gimbrede, portrait and miniature artist, and the five other professors.
