Mexican War-date Autograph Letter Signed by W.S. Bliss, 2pp. quarto,, Mexico City, October 25, 1847, with integral leaf addressed to Capt. Nathan H. Bliss, and reads in part: “...I find my head on shoulders, safe and sound but, hundreds have been killed in this valley, and two in my company, five wounded. I think we have lost more than a thousand killed and wounded...it was nothing but hard fought battles, six in all before we got in the city, although the city is splendid I am of the opinion it cost almost too much...our reinforcements coming up from Vera Cruz have had another battle with Santa Ana in which Capt. Walker was killed...but we took two pieces of artillery from him...we had only 12 thousand and Santa Ana had over thirty and in fortified possession....I cannot forget...the dead in the battlefield & some without legs & some without arms...calling for help...the Mexicans are not disposed to make peace at present so therefore no one knows how long that we will remain in this God foresaken country...” Very good condition.
