A great Mexican War officer's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Topographical Engineer Charles N. Hagner, "City of Mexico," April 20, 1848 to future New Hampshire Governor Ichabod Goodwin, in part: "Halls of the Montezumas -City of the Aztecs. Do not say, my dear Captain that you have never received a letter from…'them halls'…I have a few copies of a map of the valley of Mexico showing the movements of the army & the various reports of those battles…Tho' peace has so often been talked of & a treaty made ratified by our Senate & commissioners sent out. We, in this delightful spot!! Cannot yet see the first glimpses of…rejoining our families. Can you not get up a good rebellion in New England-a Hartford Convention or something of the kind & have us all back again in the states shortly?…the court of Inquiry on Genl. Pillows case of Genl. Scott's removal from the command of the army…[is] the general opinion of the army…vary but little from the opinion expressed throughout the states, except that a general [?] of indignation has shown the feeling existing here in favor of Scott & the course pursued towards him. The general opinion here is that it has retarded…the settlement…of peace…Tho' the Antheum were so kind as to withdraw the favor they once extended us…I take the liberty of sending them a copy of this map…will prove valuable as references & enable readers of the documents accompanying the Presidents message to understand the movements of the army with great accuracy…". Fine.
