BARNUM, Phineas Taylor (1810-1891) was an American showman, businessman, and entertainer, remembered for promoting celebrated hoaxes and for founding the circus that became the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. His successes may have made him the first "show business" millionaire.[citation needed] Although Barnum was also an author, publisher, philanthropist, and for some time a politician, he said of himself, "I am a showman by profession...and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me,". Barnum is widely but erroneously credited with coining the phrase "There's a sucker born every minute." Autograph Letter Signed “P.T. Barnum” 1pp. octavo, with his personal stamp at top margin “FEB 6 1873 438 FIFTH AVENUE NEW YORK”, and reads “My deaf Jeffry Yours recd. The Central Park Museum folks know me. You may refer to me if you like...” Small fold separation repair, else near fine condition.
