He served in both the Army and the Navy during the Civil War; Dr. Jacob Da Silva Solis Cohen of Philadelphia: in 1861 as Assistant Surgeon 26'th Penn. Volunteers, transferring end of year to U.S. Navy and serving through to 1864. Also a surgeon under Admiral S. F. DuPont in the expedition to Port Royal, S.C. on the U.S. Steamer "Florida;" remained in South Atlantic Blockading Squadron until 1864. Appears he also served afterwards as visiting surgeon to two military hospitals in Philadelphia. Post-war he became pioneer surgeon in throat diseases and among most prominent in the medical field. Partly-printed Document Signed, "J. Solis Cohen" 1p. quarto, being a death certificate for H.M. Richards, a 36 year old white male , who died of consumption on October 10, 1873. Fine.
