MacNEIL, Hermon Atkins (1866-1947) American sculptor best known work is as the designer of the Standing Liberty quarter, which as minted from 1916 to 1930, and carries his initial to the right of the date. He also made Justice, the Guardian of Liberty on the east pediment of the United States Supreme Court building. One of his principal works is the sculpture in Columbus, Ohio, in honor of President William McKinley. In 1909 he won in competition a commission for a large soldiers' and sailors' monument in Albany, New York. Typed Letter Signed “H.A. MacNeil” 1-1/4pp. quarto, on his personal stationary, October 27, 1915, addressed to Major James H. Manning, Albany New York, and reads in part: “...The Architects who worked with us on our Albany Memorial, Messrs. Lord & Hewlett have just told me about the Plattsburg Memorial that is soon to be given out to an Architect to do. I believe this Memorial is to commemorate the MacDonough victory and will probably be an important affair....I have not been in Albany in the past year to see how the Memorial there is toning down. Last time that I was there I looked over the work carefully and found that our great care to produce an air-chamber inside the memorial so as to keep it dry had resulted in some of the lime from the brickworkd inside exuding a trifle here and there on the surface. This has I presume ceased by this time and if the elements have not washed it off I should be glad to know it. ....” Very good condition.
