WALLACE, Henry Agard (1888-1965) was the 33rd Vice President of the United States (1941–1945), the Secretary of Agriculture (1933–1940), and the Secretary of Commerce (1945–1946). In the 1948 presidential election, Wallace was the nominee of the Progressive Party. Typed Letter Signed “Henry” 1p. quarto, October 22, 1963, and reads in part: “...I got to Idlewild far more frequently than to New York...The more I see of New York the less, I find, does it fit into my scheme of things. During the past 12 months I have been in Puerto Rico, Haiti twice, Dominican Republic twice, El Salvador once, and Jamaica one. In December I am going to Honduras. In June of 1957 I went to Cuba to address a Methodist Mission School. I also looked into the possibilities of doing tropical corn breeding work there but decided that the political situation was too unstable. Since then I have made understanding Latin America, especially the part on our door step, a major interest. I very, very much doubt if talking about it on the air would help to bring about the eventual stability of people who are well fed and who have hope in the future...” Fine condition.
