Metal thirteen stars and stripe patriotic shield mounted on wood backing, 12-1/4”x9-1/4”, c. 1890, hand painted red, white and blue with gold stars. About very good condition. The use of gold stars versus white stars on U.S. flags began in the Revolutionary war and continued through the Civil War, since white stars got dirty and silver stars tarnished, gold stars remained brilliant and easily seen by the troops.
