An enormous legal document archive, most from Warren County, North Carolina, with items dating from the Revolutionary War through the 1870’s, consisting of several hundred documents, including slave documents, arrest warrants, wills, bastard child documents, writs, depositions, mortgages, and various other legal instruments. An very small sample of this massive archive, includes: “Negro List” 1pp. folio, 1793, listing thirteen slaves by name, being mortgaged for 347 pounds....plus; Writ executed against Newett Harris, 1pp. quarto, 1793, to be brought to the Court House at Warrenton and answer to James Paine pertaining to a debt....plus; ADS, 1pp. octavo, August 3, 1778, ordering the sheriff to “take the body of Peter Green and William Green...to answer unto Aggy Patterson in a plea of Trespass Assault and Battery Damage two hundred and fifty pounds...” ...plus; Negro Hire, 1pp. quarto, May 27, 1840, “On or before the 1st day of January next we promise to pay Martha W. Clanton one hundred & forty dollars for the hire of negroes Ben & John...”...plus; Warrant for Assault and Battery, 1pp. folio, July 5, 1879, “to any constable or other lawful office of said county...Robert Coon...with force and arms...commit an assault and battery...these are therefore to command you forewith to apprehend the said Robert Coon...” Most are very good or better condition. A wonderful treasure trove of historical documents from North Carolina.
