Highly unusual group of three South Carolina documents, dated December 3, 1804, permitting Captain John Hughbank to pass into the Creek Nation. The main document is a 1p. quarto, manuscript authorized by James Blakeney, Cadwallader Lucy, Look Young, Thomas Brown and Lark Cantey, and states “Whereas Capt. John Hughbank of the District and state aforesaid hath signified to us his intention of travelling to the Western Country with view of settling there. These are therefore to certify that the said Capt. Hughbank was raised within the compass of our knowledge and has always conducted himself as a sober, honest, industrious, good citizen and a friend to the common cause of his country, who is worthy the attention of all good citizens, wherever he may travel or settle...” About good condition.
