Autograph Letter Signed by S. McClelland, 3pp. folio, April 8, 1847, with integral leaf addressed to his father James McClelland in New Alexandria, Pennsylvania, with “MILLERSBURG OHIO” cads, it reads in part: “...I have set me down to drop a few lines to let you know we are all well and doing as well almost as can be expected of poor sinners in this sin troubled world as it concerns our temperal affairs. Peace and plenty crowns the board for which I hope we thankful are and pray that from the same good Lord the same good blessings you all may share. Forgetting the Niggers and saying nothing about the starving Irish and murdered Mexicans...You tell us that your Preacher gave you a lecture on Slavery glad to hear a man come out...Sometimes I wonder who is right when I see the DD who has been to college and got their noodles filled with knowledge who have nothing else to do but search the scriptures through and through and study out the will of God and guide poor sinners in the road that leads to happiness above. Then I see such men as this whatever is right and we can’t make one hair black and another white because God said there will be worse than worse must come and we must blow the fife and beat the drum or else the will of God cannot be done on earth, as it is beyond the sun...More. Very good condition. On April 1, 1892, an unidentified black male was lynched in Millersburg by an unnamed and unknown group. Papers reported that he was the only black man in the county and had been “annoying people in various ways”. The man was found hanged from the courthouse lawn one morning after several people heard noises during the night
