A great Clipper Ship related letter, 2pp, 4to., written by a certain "J. E. Cummings", Merchants Hotel, N. Y., March 20, 1853", reading, in part: "…I arrived here Thursday…Friday I took a first cabin passage on board the Clipper Oregon (1000 tons burthen) she will sail tomorrow…all the births were engaged last Friday and they refused to take anymore…she takes 200 passengers, is laden principally with provisions, liquor and pine lumber; and takes out stones for her return voyage so there is no danger of not having sufficient provisions. The vessel has lately been refitted and everything looks clean and neat. The births are all double; my bedfellow is a gentlemanly looking young man from Detroit…the cabin is above in the front part of the vessel and the most airy place. A small window is above my birth which can be opened…most of the passengers are young men…there are 30 married ladies going…I am going on board the vessel tomorrow morning…write to me at Melbourn Australia…". Original stamped transmittal leaf is attached. VG.
