MADISON, James (1751-1836), fourth President of the United States (1809-17), considered the Father of the Constitution, he also served as Secretary of State under Thomas Jefferson. MONROE, James (1758-1831), who succeeded Madison as President, under his administration, the Monroe Doctrine was enacted, Spain ceded Florida to the U.S. and the Missouri Compromise was signed by him. Partly-printed Document Signed, "James Madison" as President and "Jas. Monroe" as Secretary of State, 1p. large folio, with wonderful engraving of a “tall ship” at top, and lighthouse as second engraving, June 12, 1816, vellum. In part, “By the President of the United States of America Suffer the Brig Hessenger of Philadelphia, Jonathon Webb commander ... of one hundred thirty tons ... with no guns, navigated with seven men, To Pass with her Company Passengers Goods and Merchandise without any hindrance seizure or molestation ...” Scallop top, seal intact, near perfect Madison signature, and strong Monroe signature.
