GARFIELD, James (1831-1881) Twentieth President , Garfield rose to major general during the Civil War, served as chief of staff under Rosecrans and won his seat in Congress while still in uniform. He was elected President and Senator - both in 1880. He was shot by Charles Guiteau in Washington after only three months as President and died later in New Jersey. Autograph Letter Signed as congressman, “J.A. Garfield” Oct. 5, 1864, 8" x 10", 1pp., to fellow Ohio politician, J. Park Alexander. In full, "Yours of Sept 26th is received - I should be very glad to be at your place as you request - but I am engaged in the political campaign every day till the State Elections."
