REAGAN, Ronald (1911-2004) California Governor, (1967 -1975), Fortieth President of the United States who served for two terms (1981-1989) and contributed to the fall of European Communism. Autograph Letter Signed as California Governor, “Ron” 1pp., July 25, 1968, to “Chuck” (likely Charlton Heston), np. This appears to be a hand written draft as line is drawn through the text, then initials “DK” with the date of 7-25-68, indicating that it was later typed. In full, “Dear Chuck, You were more than kind to write as you did & both Nancy & I are grateful. There have been some threats, and apparently I’m one the Black Panthers have named as part of the juice if Huey Newton should be convicted; also in retaliation for the King murder. The recall movement is really a political gimmick & I’m doubtful it will get anywhere at all. Some who’ve defected have been quoted in the press as saying there was no real effort to bring about a recall, but merely to create an embarrassment prior to the convention. Again thanks & thanks so much for the letters in my behalf. Sincerely, Ron.” July 15, 1968, Black Panthers cofounder Huey Newton, began his murder trial in Oakland. Governor Ronald Reagan addressed the Republican Convention in early August 1968, and received 182 votes for the Presidential nomination.
