Political imprint "Speech of Mr. Barnard, of New York, in the House of Representatives of the United States, The Bill To Refund The Fine Imposed Upon General Jackson," Washington, 1844, 20pp., 5" x 8," disbound, ex-library stamp. In question was a bill in Congress to repay Andrew Jackson the $1,000 fine leveled on him by Judge Dominic Hall in 1815. Judge Dominick Hall of New Orleans was forced into exile by Gen. Andrew Jackson, for issuing a writ of habeas corpus for a state legislator who Jackson had arrested, using his martial law powers, after the legislator publicly criticized Jackson's high handed treatment of the citizenry of New Orleans during the War of 1812. Now, after nearly 30 years and approaching his death, the former President may be re-imbursed.
