Autograph Letter Signed by a new bride, 4pp. octavo, Washington, D.C., January 15, 1868, and reads in part: “...I received your letter some time ago & did not wish to answer it until I was married, which would have been soon, had not something dreadful happened to prevent the marriage at the time appointed. An Indian, one of the Genl. tribes attempted to poison him, he was in a stupor four days from the drug the man gave him, he had hid him away so that no one could find him. He did not come to his sense until the evening of the day we were to have been married. You can imagine my feelings. It took the Genl. a week to recover from the effects, not entirely however but enough that we were married...I received a great many elegant presents which are too numerous to mention. I will tell you of some, a set of jewelry gold, but beautifully made, a set of coral jewelry which is very handsome, a pair of bracelets I think are beautiful, both of the last named my husband gave me, twelve gold ice cream spoons, also one large one, a silver & gold card receiver, a beautiful pearl fan, lace collars, handkerchiefs & c....” Near fine condition.
