Autograph Letter Signed by H.G. Otis, 1pp. quarto, Boston, March 28, 1803, with integral leaf addressed to Asher Robbins of Newport, and reads in most part: "...The bearer hereof Mr. Lovett, visit Newport upon business, to effect which I recommend him to you. His brother Capt. Lovett lately purchased a brig from one Capt. [Freeman] Mayberry, taking his bill of sale and warranty to defend her against all persons - upon her arrival here, she was seized & libeled for being concerned in the Slave trade and the evidence is such that I think she will be condemned. Mr. Lovell and his partner now wish to obtain security from Mr. Mayberry which you can put them in a way to obtain..." Fine condition. Between 1784 and 1807 when no more slaves could be legally imported anywhere into the United States, 204 Rhode Island citizens collaborated in financing 229 voyages to Africa.
