Autograph Letter Signed by Robert H. Crist of Indiana who later served in the 21st Ind Vols as private 1st Ind. Hvy. Art as lieutenant, 4pp. quarto, Natchez, Mississippi, September 28, 1859, and reads in part: "...I am working in the shade most of the time in the mill...Curtis says I have turned overseer...I have only to lay off the work and he has 5 or 6 darkies who are sort of carpenters, they do the work roll the timber around &c. I have to see to them, and the rest of the time I am working on pulleys in the mill, and hence Curtis has styled me an overseer. Brown has an overseer. A young Scotchman Brown is a good master. There has not been a slave struck since I came here. Iam told there is rings down below in the mill where they dress them out sometime. Many of the hands never was struck. Some deserve it. Brown has had some slaves leave him, he says he would not send for them if thy would agree to come back. He never sells any of his slaves. When they get sick he doctors them up. One of them came out today and went to work, Brown told him to go back till he got better. He has one man and his wife in Arkansas living on top of the pile as far as niggers can at the springs. The old man Brown sends him money when he wants it. This slave was one of Browns first slaves used to do all his rafting &c was very trusty. Brown lets him do as he likes. He has 30 or 40. The young niggers about 18 or 20 feel as much at homes as if they were heir to his property. One black faced gemous says he is white only tanned a little. They talk about the telegraph the rail roads, congress &c..." Fine condition.
