Autograph Letter Signed by Robert H. Crist of Indiana who later served in the 21st Ind Vols as private 1st Ind. Hvy. Art as lieutenant, 4pp. quarto, Natchez, Mississippi, November 13, 1859, and reads in part: "...I have 3 men two Irish men and one white man. The niggers are getting the foundation ready and moving the timbers to their place, we will commence raising this week...Jim Gay left this house Sunday got a little tight and was a little saucy as near as I can learn to some steam boat hands that came off to get some refreshments. They were Irish. One of our crowd an Irish man with Gay the steam boat men shoved Mc, Gays friend as they supposed out doors and told him that Gay would never get out of there. Gay heard this and an Irishman came up to him and struck him. Gay got out his knife and they had it for a short time. The boat hand fell from loss of blood and gay made for the door which was held by another. He knocked him away and left, came home and routed us....he was stabbed on the right side and back of the ear, there was a light scratch on the left jugular which they paid no attention to, till Saturday 6 days after it commenced bleeding and nearly bled him to death...There has been one man killed in a fight since, and last night there was a man killed in cold blood...A negro ran away a few days ago came into town, he had once been the husband of our washer woman. He came to her and wanted her to keep him and secret him for a while. She told him she could not, he went off and came back at night and cut her three times with a knife, and then left for parts unknown, she is not cut bad...The Harpers Ferry case creates some excitement here, the free Negroes will have to leave the state unless they have a permit from the Legislature, it is making blue looking times here for many of them for there is lots of them here..."
