Autograph Letter Signed by Robert H. Crist of Indiana who later served in the 21st Ind Vols as private 1st Ind. Hvy. Art as lieutenant, 4pp. quarto, Natchez, Mississippi, September 17, 1859, and reads in part: "...We started on the John Warner, a regular Missouri Packet a better set of officers than I ever supposed run on this creek. They were gentlemen and accommodating sociable, sober and White...A man from Michigan that had been to Natchez told us just after we left Chicago that if we would go to Natchez he would see that we got work, so we kept right on down here, and here we are....He immediately sent a nigger with a cart to the wharf boat after our chests &c and as soon as he got back we went to work...Natchez is said to be the nicest town on the Mississippi...the mill we are working on is 60 by 100 with any amount of wings. We drink rain water...I must tell you about the niggers. There is nothing but niggers all around. Brown has a crowd of them we have nigger waiters for everything. We saw some of the awfulest specimens of humanity on the way down...." Fine condition.
