Newspaper, Harpers Weekly, August 3, 1861, 16pp., complete issue, disbound. From the front page, a half page engraving "The Death of Rebel General Garnett, at Battle of Laurel Hill." Garnett was the first Officer killed in the war. From the center spread, a dramatic engraving "Colonel Hunter's Attack at the Battle of Bull's Run". And a fascinating report "The Attack on the Second Mate" which relates the little known heroic action of a Black man, William Tillman. He was steward and cook onboard the merchant schooner S.J. Waring, which was captured by the Confederate privateer Jeff Davis. They declared the schooner property of the Confederate States of America. The confederates put a five man prize crew on Tillman's ship and turned her south, toward Charleston. However, single handed, William Tillman was able to re-gain control of the ship after killing two of the Confederates and chaining the others. He received $6000 prize money for his effort. Loose at spine.
