Two Newspapers, Frank Leslie's Illustrated, January 31, 1863 and May 9, 1863, complete issues, 16pp., disbound, loose at spine else VG. War date issue with reports and engravings of the War. Most striking is the use of Negro labor. From the January 31st issue, a center spread, "The Rebels Preparing for the union Attack on Charleston ...," shows the conscripted slaves at work. Then, from the may 9th issue, another center spread, "Contrabands Building a Levee on the Mississippi River Below Baton Rouge ...," again showing the former slaves at work.
