Civilian letter, written and signed by "G.S. Woolman," 4pp., Mantua, Jan 5th, 1862 [actually written January 5, 1863], with cover. In part, "The contrabands seem to have a very good time of it. That glorious Proclamation of the President has gone into effect and if carried out with the spirit in which it was written, will be one of the strongest blows yet struck at the rebellion, and we may hope to see the sunrise on the first day of January next, upon a united and happy country, and not a single slave in all this broad spans of land ..."
