A great Reconstruction era CDV depicting a mass of newly freed slaves being massacred by a band of armed Southerners while President Andrew Johnson, who is dressed as a king, peers out the door of his hobble. Scrawled on the wall of the building is: "Treason is a Crime. Traitors must be Punished. I am your Moses." Johnson evoked the wrath of both sides of Congress after persistently advocating the resumption of power held by Southern whites over the common welfare of its recently freed slave population. Published Sarony, New York City after a painting by Thomas Nast in 1868. VG
