Newspaper, Harper's Weekly, New York.16pp., complete issue, disbound, July 28,1866, VG. From an interior pages an engraving "Marks of Punishment Inflicted Upon a Colored Servant in Richmond, Virginia," with an accompanying report titled, "A Cruel Punishment." In part, "..I send you a photograph showing in part the effects of a punishment by a hot iron on the back of a girl about 13 years .... Live coals were laid upon her back and the back of her head, and the flesh on her back and limbs was so that when she was released she could scarcely stand and was nearly crazy. ...." Other than the images of slave Gordon showing the scars on his back, (also listed in this auction) this is the only image we have seen, and this one of a young girl makes it very desirable.
