Newspaper, Harper's Weekly, New York.16pp., complete issue, disbound, June 30, 1866, VG. From an interior page, a 1/2 page engraving, "Marriage of a Colored Soldier at Vicksburg by Chaplain Warren of the Freedman's Bureau." Because marriages between slaves before emancipation had no legal standing, many couples rushed to have their marriages officially registered and made solemn during Reconstruction. The Freedmen's Bureau along with African-American ministers became strong advocates of legalized marriages. This sketch showed a chaplain marrying an African-American couple in the offices of the Vicksburg, Mississippi Freedmen's Bureau. Then, on another interior page, Nast presents "The Contrast of Suffering: Andersonville & Fortress Monroe." Nast's protest of the prison life of former Confederate President Jefferson Davis containing contrasting views of the fictional cushy life of Davis at Fort Monroe with one of depravity for Union prisoners at the notorious Confederate prison, Andersonville.... plus, Harper's Weekly, New York.16pp., complete issue, disbound, September 15, 1866, VG. From an interior page, two engravings of former CSA President Jefferson Davis' Plantation. One shows his plantation, the other shows the slave quarters on his plantation.
